There were also video messages from Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn) and Samuel L Jackson (Mace Windu).

Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm's fan convention honoring the beloved sci-fi saga, kicked off this week in Orlando, Florida, and has already attracted an impressive crowd of fans and honored guests from the franchise. It was a hard part to play, and she pulled it off brilliantly.

"There are not very many people like her".

Lucas spoke about casting Fisher in what would become her career-defining role, saying, "It was her war, and when I cast it, I said I want somebody young to play the part". She recalled of her mother: "She was imperfect in many ways but her imperfections and willingness to speak about them are what made her more than flawless". That is Leia. Thank you for loving her and carrying on what she stands for. There are not very many people like her. Audiences were in disbelief, giving the creator of Star Wars a huge standing ovation, lightsabers held high in the air. As a parting gift, attendees were given a very fitting, limited and numbered lithograph commemorating the life of Carrie Fisher. Footage and interviews showed both the Leia we loved and the smart and talented actress we got to know in later years (including a recitation of her New Hope monologue across decades), as well as the legacy she left behind. I look forward to enjoying these short films and reading the Forces of Destiny books together; and you bet my daughter is going to get each and every one of these new action figures.

The tribute concluded with Star Wars composer John Williams taking center stage, accompanied by the Orlando Philharmonic orchestra.
