While he was very critical of Trump during the 2016 campaign, Obama has been reluctant to respond to his successor statements and actions from the White House since he left office, choosing to react only once: Last month, when Trump accused Obama of ordering illegal wiretaps of Trump Tower.

Former President Barack Obama plans to visit Germany in May to sit down with German Chancellor Angela Merkel for a panel discussion on democracy, returning to the global stage after what will be four months out of the White House.

The discussion is being organized jointly by the conference, which is held every two years, and the Obama Foundation.

Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel enjoyed a drink together during the former President's 2013 trip to Berlin.

Obama spokesman Eric Schultz confirmed the former president's plans to join Merkel for 'a moderated conversation on the importance of democracy and taking on responsibility locally and globally'.

Kirchentag President Christina Aus der Au and Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, EKD Council chair, will moderate the discussion at the Brandenburg Gate.

It will be a centrepiece of the biennial gathering of the church, which is this year focusing on commemorations of the Reformation, launched in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral.

When a German reporter questioned Trump about his accusations that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower during the election, he turned to Merkel and said, "As far as wiretapping, at least we have something in common, perhaps". The churches form a global civil society network of over two billion Christians.

Germany and the US have also expressed differences over worldwide free trade agreements since Trump became president.
