Shockers make move: Wichita State leaving MVC for AAC

It will officially join the league on July 1. The Shocker baseball team plays Missouri State the weekend after Easter, and the school's final MVC competition will be the conference tournament at Hammons Field in late May.

"We are very pleased to welcome Wichita State to the American Conference", UConn men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie said in a statement released by the college.

Additionally, ESPN's Andy Katz reported the league will stick with an 18-game conference format, with each school playing home-and-home dates against seven teams, and one game a year against four other teams.

Two games against Wichita State are good for the RPI.

With this move, it'll be interesting to see if there's any pressure there for Wichita State to add a football program. Wichita State has been to six consecutive NCAA Tournaments while the rest of the MVC, outside of an occasional rise from Northern Iowa or Illinois State, has wallowed.

Wichita State finished its 2016-2017 campaign with a 31-5 overall record, falling to Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament's second round.

The move makes geographic sense for Wichita and the AAC teams located in the middle of the country, such as Tulsa, Houston, SMU, Memphis. Both conference champion SMU and Cincinnati were seeded sixth in their regionals and lost in the first round. "I wish both of them nothing but the best in their future endeavors". "So this will be a welcome change for us". The school, which is now a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, does not have a football program but it is a powerhouse in men's basketball. Wichita State has not had a football team since 1986. In fact, after the Big 12 made a decision to stand pat, there was always a sense among UC officials that it was just a matter of time before more movement occurred. Loyola left the Horizon League after 34 years and accepted the Valley's invitation that April to become the league's 10th member.

The MVC's last shift came in March of 2013, when Creighton left for the Big East. Now the AAC is adding a top-notch basketball program to a league that clearly needed a boost.

The report also states that potential expansion could be discussed.

That gets in the way of getting into the NCAA tournament - not to mention getting the type of seed that lends itself to multiple wins once there.

Boatright, trusted by Bardo to take the lead role, kept much of the conversation between the consultants and the AAC quiet, shielding information from Bardo and his coaches to protect avoid leaks that might scare off AAC schools. "With his vision and leadership of where this institution is going, which includes athletics, I consider him a visionary", WSU athletic director Darron Boatright said in a Friday news conference in Wichita.
