Penelope Cruz 'to play Donatella Versace in American Crime Story'

Oscar victor Penélope Cruz is to portray Donatella Versace in Versace: American Crime Story, which chronicles the murder of the fashion icon's designer brother Gianni by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in 1997.

Speaking to Variety about the Lady Gaga rumours in January, show boss Murphy said there had been no talks with the singer, who had a Golden Globe-winning role in sister show American Horror Story. In her USA television debut, Cruz will star opposite previously casted stars Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss as designer Gianni Versace and serial killer Andrew Cunana, respectively.

American Crime Story: Versace will air sometime after American Crime Story: Katrina, whenever that is. But this news puts those rumors to rest.

Versace marks Cruz's first TV series regular role. She has a number of firsts to her credit as well, including the first Spanish actress to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the first Spanish actress to receive an Academy Award, which she won in the Best Supporting Actress category in 2009 for her role as painter Maria Elena in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Since marrying fellow Oscar-winning Spaniard Javier Bardem in 2010, Cruz has been flying under the radar, appearing a year ago in the ill-fated Zoolander 2.

Penelope Cruz has been cast in the third season of American Crime Story.

Versace, from Fox 21 and FX Prods., is based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth.

The second and third seasons of the show are being filmed in rather-close proximity to one another, and are both going to air (tentatively) at some point in 2018.

Cruz isn't the first big name to sign on to the anthology show; the first season starred John Travolta, Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr.

Tom Rob Smith will serve as writer for numerous Versace episodes, as well as executive producer alongside Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Brad Falchuk.
