The developer-turned-politician, who ranked No. 336 past year, fell further behind to Bill Gates, the list's perennial leader.

The number of billionaires in the world hit a record high a year ago, with more than 2,000 people holding the distinction, Forbes revealed in its annual list of the world's billionaires released on Monday.

The magazine also notes that he gave $66 million to his presidential campaign and paid $25 million to settle a lawsuit related to Trump University.

According to Forbes, Bill Gates is the number one richest for the fourth year in a row, and the richest person in the world for 18 out of the past 23 years.

Trump's dwindling net worth is going the other direction from many other billionaires during the past 12 months, who collectively saw their ranks swell to 2,043 worldwide with the addition of 233 newly minted billionaires, according to Forbes.

Among other luminaries on the list, Alibaba founder Jack Ma was 23rd with $28.3 billion; activist investor and Trump deregulation adviser Carl Icahn was 55th with $16.6 billion; fashion designer Giorgio Armani was tied for 215th with $6.6 billion; Hollywood director Steven Spielberg was tied for 501st with $3.7 billion; and entertainment giant Oprah Winfrey was tied for 660th with $3 billion.

The list, published Monday, tracked the mind-boggling fortunes of the world's elite and assesses the overall financial trends of the world's richest people.

And Amazon's Jeff Bezos jumped from fifth to third after adding $27.6 billion to his fortune, giving him a net worth of $72.8 billion.

While Mr. Trump's net worth slipped, more people were qualifying for the list.

Chandler is worth US$1.91b ($2.7b), a drop from US$2.45b ($3.5b) in 2016. His wealth jumped to $72.8 billion, a gain of $27.6 billion from previous year, Forbes said. His net worth surged to $75.6 billion from $60.8 billion.

The full list of billionaires can be seen here. They include 10 from China as well as Vietnam's first female billionaire, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, who took her budget airline, VietJet Air, public in February.

Last year's second richest person in the world, Spanish clothing chain Zara owner Amancio Ortega fell to forth place, despite gaining $4.3bn to his fortune this year.
