NCAA: Michigan State drills Miami

As soon as Bridges got going against Miami, Michigan State's offense was unstoppable.

The No. 2 Louisville Cardinals will play the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament after each team survived and advanced in the NCAA Tournament First Round.

For this young Michigan State team, though, it will take a herculean effort to upset the Jayhawks who are considered one of the favorites to win the entire tournament.

Michigan State comes into this game with a 19-14 record overall. But it sure looked like one of those late-season Spartans teams we're all familiar with on Friday.

"We were like, all right, they punched us in the mouth and everything that could happen happened and now it's our turn to make our run".

"When we feed off each of each other, we're hard to beat", Ward said.

Ja'Quan Newton's junior season came to a close with a team-high 16 points.

While point spreads and other external factors don't have any bearing on games elsewhere, the Spartans, along with several members of the media, watched the end of Wisconsin's upset of No. 1 overall seed Villanova in their locker room and, later, fellow-Big Ten brother Northwestern, almost knocked off No. 1 Gonzaga. The best 3-point shooting teams in the country average 11 or 12 made field goals from long range per game, and the Wolverines just dropped 16 (setting a new school record) on Oklahoma State to edge out a one-point win. As the No. 9 seed, they advance to face top-seeded Kansas on Sunday. Miami's rebounding and defense which had been their strengths all season failed them on Friday night.

"Unfortunately, there's a buzz saw in front of us, but we've had that all year", Izzo said. "We can use that again".

So the Cowboys' season ends, ousted from the NCAA Tournament in the first round for the fifth straight time. Izzo's Spartans are 47-18 with 13 Sweet 16 berths with six first-weekend exits.

Michigan State shot 57 percent from the field as it ended Miami's season.

They'll be gearing up to play the Miami Hurricanes of the ACC. Defensively, Michigan State is yielding 68.4 points against the opposing teams.

Penn State opened the scoring with a power-play tally as freshman Brandon Biro skated behind the MI net and fed classmate Liam Folkes on the left side of the crease for the 1-0 lead at 10:50. Nick Ward led the Spartans with 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Spartans extended the lead to 38-27 at the half.

"After that first seven or eight minutes, I thought we played some of the best basketball we've played, not only this year but in a couple of years, Izzo said". The first game tips at 11:10 with West Virginia playing Notre Dame.

The headlining matchup of the day was Walton vs. Oklahoma State's Jawun Evans, and it didn't disappoint. While that might last for a half, Kansas is too explosive to be shut down for 40 minutes.

Comparing what the second half turned into, the sluggish start to the first half proved to be an anomaly.
