Finsbury Park toddlers: Boy, one, dies and girl fighting for life

The scene in Wilberforce Road, near Finsbury Park, in north London after a one-year-old boy died and a girl of the same age was left in a critical condition in a flat.

The boy and girl - both one-year-old - were taken by ambulance to an east London hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead early on Sunday. His sister remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "This is clearly a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the two young children". Formal identification awaits and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

Police are making enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

Neighbours called for emergency services and a police helicopter was dispatched to try and find the suspected attacker.

Neighbours recalled hearing a woman screaming for herlp shortly before police arrived, she is believed to be their mother Cristinela Datcu.

I was watching TV, she said.

"She kept on shouting".

"There have been no arrests at this stage".

The children were found with serious injuries at the property.

Mihai Manea, who lived on the second floor of the building, said the toddlers were twins who lived on the top floor.

"It's really tense", he said.

He added: There's police coming and going all the time.
