The seized weapons included about 9,000 CETME rifles, 1,000 brand-name rifles, 400 howitzers, anti-aircraft guns, grenades, pistols and revolvers.

Officials said that weapons were sold in Spain, France and Belgium, and linked the find to the hunt for a gunman who killed four people at a Jewish museum in Brussels three years ago.

Photos published by the police show piles of assault rifles, guns and weapons parts lying in stacks and leaning against the walls of a warehouse.

Spanish Police have released striking pictures of a huge weapons haul seized from an organised crime group.

Police also seized gun-making machinery and tools along with many spare parts such as barrels, bolts, magazines, pins and stocks. They bought the weaponry through auctions and legal channels.

On Tuesday, investigators released images of the guns and ammunition that were confiscated in January during an operation against firearms traffickers, reports the EFE news agency.

The weapons were restored and sold on the black market throughout Europe, according to police.

The organised crime group sold deactivated firearms which did not comply with the existing deactivation standards, and live firing firearms, in Spain and other European countries like France and Belgium. The reactivation of deactivated weapons and conversion of blank-firing firearms are among the main sources of illegal firearms trafficked in the EU (see EU Serious and Organised Crime Threat Assessment 2017 (SOCTA)).
