National Basketball Association playoff race: Dwyane Wade's injury deals blow to Bulls' chances

On Thursday, the Bulls announced that guard Dwyane Wade will miss the remaining part of the regular season after suffering a sprain and small fracture in his right elbow against the Grizzlies on Wednesday.

Wade tried to play through the injury, but he was taken out of the game with 8:35 left in the fourth quarter and didn't return. He was spotted wearing the bum arm in a sling, giving Chicago fans a reason to think their season is practically over.

The Bulls are now a game behind both the Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons for the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Jimmy Butler recorded his 10 double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 assists against the Hornets on Monday, matching his total from 2015-16.

"It wasn't the worst-case scenario", Wade told reporters after Thursday's practice, per ESPN.com. "We played a little bit of cards last night". But my goal is to make sure I rehab and do what's best to make sure that I'm healthy, and that I can throw those long passes that I love to throw the length of the court.

But with the elbow injury, Wade's future in Chicago is now in question. He averaged 19 points in 74 games last season after missing a combined 48 contests due to various injuries the previous two seasons. The Bulls have ruled him out for the regular season, but it's now unclear if he can make it back in time for the playoffs if the Bulls can sneak in (he'll be re-evaluated in a week).

Wizards coach Scott Brooks didn't write Chicago off without Wade. It's never a good sign when a player "hears a pop", and according to Wade, he heard a couple of them with his injury. To see Fred Hoiberg's bewilderment on the bench is to go back and forth between feeling sorry for the coach and wanting to strangle him over how he handles playing time.

With their season on the brink of complete disaster and morale low, felt like he had to say something to his struggling prior to Monday night's game against the. I talked to him, and I don't like what he had to say about this. "This is what it looks like", Wade said.
