Flynn later acknowledged in press interviews the paid engagement to appear at the RT gala to talk about radical Islam, but he also has said he wasn't uncomfortable with it in hindsight, while declining to provide details about any payments from RT.

Cummings, a Maryland Democrat and member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, sent a letter to the White House along with the documents inquiring into whether the payments were fully disclosed when Flynn was hired. "Flynn.pdf"> requesting information from the bureau relating to Flynn's speaking engagements or appearances "in connection with RT, any agent or affiliate of RT, or any agent or instrumentality of the Russian government".

The Post also published documents backing up the payments, including an email trail that showed RT and Flynn's staff haggling over his fee for the Russian Federation trip; the final agreed cost was lower than the general's initial asking price.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn received substantial paychecks from Russian entities in the year before joining Donald Trump's campaign as a surrogate, newly released documents reveal. Flynn had resigned from his White House position after misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his discussions with a Russian ambassador. Late a year ago, a senior Kaspersky Lab technician and Russian ex-cyber cop was arrested in Moscow for treason; USA intelligence sources have suggested to reporters that the arrest, and the firm, are connected to us election hacking they believe was done by Russia.

Cummings said that Flynn, as a retired general, was bound by government rules not to accept payments from rival governments, and called on the Defense Department take steps to seize Flynn's earnings from those deals.

"I can not recall any time in our nation's history when the President selected as his National Security Advisor someone who violated the Constitution by accepting tens of thousands of dollars from an agent of a global adversary that attacked our democracy", Cummings wrote in a statement. Cummings was referring to the intelligence agencies' conclusion that Russian Federation instigated cyber-hacking of Democratic party officials and organizations in the months before the presidential election. The department has also noted that the prohibition on accepting foreign gifts includes commercial groups controlled by foreign governments or others "considered instruments of the foreign government".

Leading Authorities redacted information about Flynn's other speaking engagements in 2015 that were presumably not connected to Russian Federation.

RT paid $45,386 for Flynn and his son, Michael Flynn Jr., to fly to Moscow to speak at the English-language network's 10th anniversary celebration, where he dined at the same table as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein.

A spokesman for Flynn declined comment. Flynn got almost $34,000 from the engagement, the report said. Flynn's final cut was $33,750, after his speakers' bureau, Leading Authorities, took a 25 percent commission.

"If Gen. Flynn is coming, we would like him to be front and central at the Moscow conference", an RT official told Flynn's representatives in a November 2015 email. Flynn sat next to Russian President Vladimir Putin during dinner at the event.

According to the documents, Flynn also received $11,250 from a Russian charter cargo airline and $11,250 from a Russia-based cybersecurity corporation, though neither of those companies were state-owned.

It is still not clear what prompted Flynn to register as a foreign agent for that work.

Flynn accepted the payments before he signed on as a Trump campaign advisor, ultimately becoming his national security advisor.

This is not the first time Flynn has conducted business associated with foreign governments.

The Democratic side of the House Oversight Committee published the documents on Thursday, just more than a week after Flynn registered as a foreign agent of Turkey.
