Patriots sign former Bengals running back Rex Burkhead

It continues to get weirder, as the New England Patriots are bringing in former Cincinnati Bengals running back Rex Burkhead.

For his career, Burkhead has made one start and has 87 rushing attempts for 375 yards and three touchdowns to go with 34 receptions for 288 yards with one score. While making at least nine regular season appearances for the Bengals in each of the last three seasons, he failed to see the field during a regulation game as a rookie back in 2013-2014. That would open up competition with Dion Lewis and James White for the starting gig next season, but even if Burkhead doesn't win that job, he's good enough to split carries with those two guys in New England. He led the Bengals in special-teams snaps in 2015, when he barely played on offense.

His breakout performance came in Week 17, when he carried the ball 27 times for 119 yards with two touchdowns.

Burkhead could replace free agent Brandon Bolden as the Patriots' special-teams ace/d0-everything back.

Fantasy Impact Burkhead is coming off of a career year in 2016 in which he accumulated 344 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while catching 17 targets for 145 yards as a receiver. Most likely, Burkhead will be part of a committee with Lewis and White.

The running back market has been very weird so far in the 2017 National Football League offseason.

Although Bernard and Hill have shared running back duties for several years now, that won't stop the Bengals from exploring their options at the position.
