Diego Simeone confident Atletico Madrid will keep focus vs. Leverkusen

"It's clear that it's a result that makes it hard for us to advance to the next stage, but in the last few days we've seen what can happen in football", Leverkusen coach Tayfun Korkut told Spanish daily Marca.

"We know it's going to be hard and it's hardly possible, but we will give it our all and try to make the impossible possible", said centre-back Omer Toprak.

Leverkusen's coach Tayfun Korkut gestures on the sidelines during the German Bundesliga soccer match between Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen at the BayArena, in Leverkusen, Germany, Friday, March 10, 2017.

In fact, Bayer Leverkusen have lost nine of their last 10 Champions League knockout games (W1), their only win in that run coming against Atletico Madrid (1-0, February 2015).

"We're going into the game wanting to win as we always do. We know what result we need to reach the quarters".

Bayer Leverkusen got knocked out in the 2014/2015 edition of the Champions League at this same stage by Atletico.

Preparation for exams often comes at the expense of free time, but for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz it will cost him a Champions League appearance.

Turkey global defender Omer Toprak will also miss the game in the Spanish capital because of an ankle problem sustained in the weekend draw with Werder Bremen, with Jonathan Tah, Lars Bender and Stefan Kiessling already on the treatment table.

Along with Torres, defender Stefan Savic has also been cleared to play after suffering a broken nose against Granada on Sunday.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller knows it will take a momentous effort for his club to stay in Europe.

"We are against an opponent who will be risky", he said.

"The situation is hard, but we have seen a lot in football. For this we have to be sure of ourselves and not concede an early goal".

The LaLiga club, runners-up in the competition in 2014 and 2016, are aiming to reach the last eight for the fourth successive season.

Atletico will definitely be without captain Gabi and left-back Filipe Luis as they picked up yellow cards towards the end of the first leg.
