NCAA | UK gets No. 2 seed, opens vs. NKU

The only other real threats in a solid but not overly impressive East Region are No. 3 Baylor and No. 5 Virginia, but most of the other higher seeds face some hard lower-seeded teams like UNC Wilmington (No. 12 facing Virginia) or Eastern Tennessee State (No. 13 facing No. 4 Florida) and could perhaps offer a respite for the Cats if they take care of business. Others, notably Iowa and IL from the Big Ten tournament, had their shots at a tournament bid slip away. Xavier takes on #18 Butler Thursday evening, Kansas State faces #9 Baylor later that night, and USC gets #3 UCLA late on the West Coast. As a result, I now have Kansas State in the field, and Illinois State dropping out.

The field will be announced during the CBS Selection Sunday Show. They got caught at home by a hungry BYU team for their only loss. Overall, Syracuse went just 10-5 against team outside the RPI top 100. Differences were squared, so that teams that aren't close in all those categories would not appear. Don't be surprised if this year is a reverse of last year, when they were a 2, and got stunned. Some are similar to lots of prior teams; others are more unique.

Providence earned its fourth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance with an at-large bid.

It's easy to see why this team has the makeup and mettle to be the last team standing-and make history in the process. The program earned its only other No. 1-seed in the 2012-13 season but was upset in the second round. The two that missed had an RPI around 50. The teams will square off on Friday, and the victor will meet either Wichita State or Dayton. As The Sporting News noted, the team's impressive resume and ability to play their best ball at the most important time of the season could likely be enough to overcome their eight losses. As I broke down after their loss, Syracuse is a true wildcard.

The Syracuse Orange's bubble finally burst.

When Syracuse had chances to score even marginal road wins at the end of the season, the team tripped up against Pitt and Georgia Tech.

So, Syracuse is right on the cutline.

"It was definitely a little bit disappointing and frustrating, but one thing I learned is that it all worked the best for me because I eventually got better", he said.

Now we know Rhode Island is in, VCU already was a virtual lock and now there's for sure one less spot open. Instead, they finished tied for third with a 12-6 conference record and then proceeded to beat Wright State in the first round of the conference tournament. At the same time, you probably don't want to have any more than two No. 1 seeds making it to Phoenix.
