Driver Plows Into Pedestrians, Dozens Of Fatalities Reported
At least 34 people have died after a runaway bus ploughed into a crowd in Haiti.
"The people who were not victims of the accident attempted to burn the bus with passengers still inside", Faustin Joseph, coordinator for the Civil Police for the Artibonite area told AFP.
The bus then tried to flee the scene, barreling into a group of musicians, killing over a dozen.
The musicians were performing in a rara parade, a Haitian tradition popular in the days leading up to Easter, in which musicians and their audience fill the streets.
The bus was travelling from Cap Haitien to Port-au-Prince at the time of the incident.
The driver tried to flee the scene after the incident.
"The bus, the passengers and the driver were all placed into the care" of the local authorities, Joseph said.
According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, people began throwing rocks at the bus, injuring others.
The horrific accident sparked a huge rescue operation attended by firefighters and ambulance crews.
Officials have put the death toll at 34, with another 17 people injured.
It is unclear what caused the initial accident.
