2 officers shot, 1 killed, after responding to traffic accident in California

A suspect was also wounded Monday morning during the shooting in Whitter, southeast of Los Angeles, according to police.

The officers, who had not yet been identified, approached the suspected gunman's vehicle completely unaware that it was stolen.

The suspect had been driving a stolen auto that he crashed in the area of Colima Road and Mar Vista Street, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. John Corina.

Two police officers were taken to a nearby hospital.

When officers did arrive, they turned the corner to talk to the suspect who immediately opened fire, striking both officers. The slain officer's name was not released.

"It's extremely tragic", Corina said. The surviving officer and suspect are now in stable condition, according to Corina. Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Associated Press the two officers were approaching the vehicle when they were shot by an alleged gang member driving a stolen auto.

"We're still looking into that", Corina said. The suspect, who has not been identified, is a known gang member, he said.

The other people involved in the traffic accident were not injured.
