Kevin Love expected to miss six weeks following knee surgery

Kevin Love #0 of the Cleveland Cavaliers Joffrey Lauvergne #77 of the Oklahoma City Thunder during the first half at Quicken Loans Arena on January 29, 2017 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The top of the Eastern Conference got a little insane Tuesday morning with news that Kevin Love underwent left knee surgery and the Toronto Raptors have acquired Serge Ibaka from the Orlando Magic.

Kevin Love will miss six weeks after having a knee procedure done, the team announced. He is averaging over twenty points per game and earned his fourth All Star appearance, helping lead the Cavs to the top of the Eastern Conference. He's shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from three.

In short, he's having a good year.

The battle for the No. 1 seed in the NBA's Eastern Conference just got interesting.

Cleveland's depth has been taking some serious hits this season.

However, the Cavs have yet to be at full strength as guard J.R. Smith continues to recover following thumb surgery. This will force Love to miss NBA All-Star weekend festivities, though it still puts him on a timetable to return before the playoffs begin barring any setbacks. "We've got guys that's ready". He is the team's leading rebounder and third-leading scorer.

Channing Frye will likely fill into Love's shoes while he is out. He could start either James Jones or Derrick Williams, who has been impressive in two games after signing a 10-day contract with the Cavs earlier this week. "The games we discussed he could possibly be out in March, we'll look forward to that". Cleveland's defense has given up 112.4 points per game over the team's last 12 games, but over the team's current 5-1 streak the Cavaliers are scoring 123.7 points per game.

The Cavs said Love, who recently missed several games with back spasms, will undergo further treatment and evaluation in the next few days.
