Netanyahu: Israel will respond to even a 'drip-drip' of rocket fire

"In response, IDF tank targeted a Hamas post in the southern Gaza Strip", the spokesperson said on its official Twitter account.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted a Hamas post in the Gaza Strip on Monday in response to shelling of Israeli servicemen, the IDF spokesperson said.

He said Hamas movement warns Israel of keeping up such stupidity, adding "blowing up the situation with the Palestinian armed resistance and targeting military and civilians interests would explode in the face of the occupation".

It was the first time since October that Israel had officially reported that a rocket fired from Gaza had reached Israel.

Hamas Movement warned Monday evening that it would not "allow a continuation of Israeli escalation against the people of Gaza".

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since 2008.

Missiles fired earlier by jets injured one elderly Palestinian man in northern Gaza.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group also condemned Monday's airstrikes, with its spokesman Ahmad al-Moudalal warning that "the continued Zionist aggression against Gaza can not pass without the occupation paying a price".

The rival parties have not contested an election since 2006 parliamentary polls, which Hamas won - sparking a conflict that led to near civil war in Gaza the following year.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Israel would not tolerate a "drizzle" of rocket attacks from the Hamas-ruled enclave.

Israel Defense Forces have completed large-scale military drills that focused on battling various scenarios of Hamas infiltration and attacks on Israel from the land, sea and air. Since the last round in 2014, a fragile ceasefire along the largely closed border has been observed.
