Gas prices moderate, may decline this month

The national average price for a gallon of gas is $2.37, three cents more than one week ago ($2.34), 17 cents more than one month ago ($2.20), and 36 cents higher the same time past year ($1.99).

That price is 5 cents more than last week and 41 cents more per gallon than a year ago at this time.

The average price of gas in Chattanooga on Sunday was $2.09 per gallon. Areas in California and their current gas price climate: Stockton- $2.65/g, up 4.5 cents per gallon from last week's $2.61/g.

To start off the week, Grand Forks gas stations were selling a gallon of gas for about $2.29. It's the latest in a string of reports indicating an increase in average price.

"Retail prices have increased for 40 of the past 42 days as a result of market reactions to the OPEC oil cut agreement".

Gas prices are continuing to surge across Metro Detroit. A week ago, the most common price was $2.299. According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on January 9 in Sacramento have ranged widely over the last five years: $2.59/g in 2016, $2.51/g in 2015, $3.53/g in 2014, $3.51/g in 2013 and $3.63/g in 2012.

Motorists will spend $52 billion more on fuel this year than last, an increase of almost 10 percent, GasBuddy estimates.

"The list of factors being mixed into the yearly forecast has never been larger", DeHaan said. Statewide prices have risen by about 15 cents per gallon in the past week, according to AAA Michigan. Brent crude, which is used to price oil sold internationally, added 21 cents to close at $57.10 a barrel in London. "This year will see a new administration take over, perhaps the most oil-friendly in some time, and with so many unknowns in regards to policy changes, we'll be keeping a keen eye on such along with taxation changes".

The increases have an immediate impact on household budgets as more and more money goes into consumer gas tanks.
