Deputies: Polk woman arrested after second newborn dies from co-sleeping

The Polk County Sheriff's Office provided WFTS with the dates and various reasons for Piche-Pitts' arrests.

Further implicating the mother and causing some to wonder whether her newborn child's death was purely coincidental is Erin Piche Pitts' criminal (extensive) record notes the nydailynews.

"You can't wait for her to smother the third one", Sheriff Grady Judd said.

"She was irresponsible and as a result, she's got two dead babies", he said. "Neither one of them had to die". Since then, she had received "repeated warnings" about co-sleeping, local authorities said.

"Co-sleeping", or sharing a bed with an infant, can lead to tragedy.

Piche-Pitts had been warned several times about the dangers of sleeping next to an infant after her first child died while they were sleeping together in 2009. Detectives say Piche-Pitts assured the physician that she would not.

The incident occurred on October 6, 2016 when the baby woke up in a bassinet next to Erin's bed and began crying.

But, similar to the incident in 2009, Piche-Pitts fell asleep. Piche-Pitts tended to the baby, giving him a bottle and propping him up with a pillow next her to her in her own bed.

The incident took place in Piche-Pitts's bedroom in Winter Haven, Florida, just a 45-minute vehicle ride east of Tampa Bay, when Eric woke up in a bassinet next to the mother's bed in the middle of the night and started crying. The baby was 18 days old.

Florida mother Erin Piche-Pitts, 25, was charged with aggravated manslaughter Tuesday for smothering her second newborn baby to death while the two were sleeping in the same bed in October.

A Florida mom was arrested and charged with manslaughter after deputies say two of her newborns died from co-sleeping. As of this posting, there is no word on if the death of her first baby may tie into the amount of sentencing she receives. The cause of death (determined to be accidental) was ruled asphyxia 'due to probable overlay and co-sleeping'.

The baby was 13 days old.

According to police and sheriff's office records, Piche-Pitts has been arrested nine times since 2005 on charges of domestic violence and aggravated battery, and possession of methamphetamine in July, while she was pregnant.
