Wreath laying ceremony set December 17 at Virgilina Cemetery

This second-annual wreath-laying ceremony will begin at noon on December 17 and will feature a guest speaker, representatives of all branches of the military, area boy scouts and local chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.

A convoy of trucks filled with Maine-made wreaths left Washington County Saturday morning, heading for Arlington National Cemetery.

Each December, the mission to remember, honor and teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as over 1,100 additional locations in all 50 US states, at sea, and overseas, according to its website.

Make plans for this Saturday, Dec. 10 and next Saturday, Dec. 17, to join family, friends and volunteers placing wreaths on headstones at Kentucky's four state veterans cemeteries.

- Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West (KVCW) in Hopkinsville will hold its wreaths on Saturday, Dec. 17 ceremony at 11 a.m.

The ceremony will include the cemetery's color guard, followed by musical selections from the choir at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lower Makefield, and words and prayers of praise from local clergy and guest speakers, said Gabriel Mascio, a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War and is coordinating the commemoration.

"We want to invite everybody to come out and help with the wreath-laying and enjoy the ceremony", said Parker. Both are in need wreaths and volunteers.
