Watkins held out of practice due to sore foot; Bills sign TE/QB

Watkins returned to practice Thursday on a limited basis after trainers held him out Wednesday because of foot soreness. It wasn't as pleasant of an outlook from Bills offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn. "Like I said, the last I heard the guy has a broken bone in his foot". "I don't know if he's going to play one play or 20 plays. He's tough, he's very determined to stay on the football field, but he has a broken bone in his foot at the end of the day". However, doctors told him he did not need another surgery and would simply need time to let the foot heal.

"The guy has a broken bone in his foot", Lynn said when he was asked about Watkins maybe playing a bigger role in this week's game against the Oakland Raiders.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan said Watkins "looked good" and expects him to play on Sunday, according to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW. Sammy Watkins' willingness to come off of injured reserve to try to help his team down the stretch when his surgically repaired foot is not 100 percent carries weight with Buffalo's offensive play caller. Watkins had three catches is the game for 80 yards in his first game action since Week 2 of the season against the New York Jets.

Watkins has said he's not overly concerned about the long-term ramifications of this injury because he can have surgery after the season if he needs it. Watkins declined to speak to reporters during a brief appearance in the locker room. Mike Rodak of ESPN.com reports that Watkins was initially expected to get a limited practice in like he did all last week, but he instead needed to sit out. Fellow wide receivers Robert Woods and Walt Powell are both out with lower-body injuries while the former suffered his setback in Week 11 while Powell got tangled up during last week's win. Ronald Darby also did not practice as he remains in the concussion protocol. They might not have Marquise Goodwin either after Goodwin left Thursday's practice early after injuring his wrist.
