Hearing Over Special Prosecutor Set in Christie Bridge Case

Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday announced some $300 million in Statehouse renovations, not an early exit from the capital city.

Richard Codey, a Democratic state senator and former governor, said he supports efforts to renovate the building but cautioned they should be done in a "cost-conscious" manner.

The governor added that one of his inspirations for undertaking the project was a recent trip to Annapolis to the Maryland State House, which is the nation's oldest.

Christie reportedly called the building unsafe, citing its lack of sprinklers and a fire suppression system, and said that he's ashamed that it is in such dire condition.

The Republican is scheduled to speak Tuesday in the Statehouse Rotunda. He noted that the administration would work with the state's Economic Development Authority, which helps businesses get low-interest loans and tax breaks, to fund the renovation.

"We will absolutely evacuate this building no later than July (2017)", Christie said.

"This building is a trap", Christie said.

Christie came into office in 2010 promising a new era of transparency and regularly holding town hall meetings. It was later changed to a press announcement instead with no availability for questions.

Christie answered some questions on his regular call-in show last week.

The scandal isn't entirely behind the governor. He alleged in a criminal complaint that Christie violated the state's official-misconduct statute by failing to reopen the lanes to the country's busiest bridge in 2013. Attorney General Chris Porrino and Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal, both appointed by Christie, have recused themselves from the case, but Brennan argued that their subordinates also should be recused.

As Christie dug zestfully into the details of his planned renovation, a source told PolitickerNJ that he/she heard the give from the Trump administration will end up being something Christie won't want so they can say they offered.
