"My aim was to portray women in a different way", says Lindbergh, who snapped his shots in May and June.

Lindbergh's aim for this year's celeb-filled calendar was "not shoot a calendar about ideal bodies but to capture sensitivity and emotion, laying bare the souls of the women in the images, rendering them more naked that a nude".

For the 2016 Pirelli calendar, Amy Schumer posed almost nude and tweeted about the image, calling it "beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting [and] flawless".

Pirelli Calendar broke its tradition of containing female nude photos past year.

"I think Peter's mission with everyone involved wanting to free women from oppressive and false standards is fantastic", Uma Thurman, who is featured in this year's calendar, said in a press conference on Tuesday.

The 2017 calendar, which is the 44th edition, is made up of 40 images, a lot of them black-and-white portraits taken in five different locations: Los Angeles, Berlin, London, New York and Le Touquet beach in France. Society always pressures women to look young and attractive and this calendar portraits try to break those shackles. "I love getting dressed up and doing the character but this was no. The ideal of flawless beauty promoted by society is something that simply can't be attained", Lindbergh said at the launch party in Paris. There is nothing more attractive than reality.

"This feels like the beginning of a new moment which is incredibly exciting", Mirren, 71, said, explaining that by showing women in a more natural way, wearing no make up, photographer Peter Lindbergh had "found the wonderful in something that is simple and human and real" as opposed to using high budget shoots and Photoshopping.

Over the years, the Pirelli Calendar has become synonymous with two seemingly incongruous things: tires and nudity. I thought that the women should look strong but natural, and I chose to keep it a very simple exercise of shooting in the studio.

And while she encouraged people to buy the calendar as a gift for girls to look up to, it's exclusively available to Pirelli VIPs.
