Penn St-Wisconsin winner in Big Ten game no lock for playoff

A berth in the College Football Playoff could be on the line when the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers take on the No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions in the 2016 Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday night in Indianapolis. The Nittany Lions spent decades at the top of the college football heap. What was far more costly to MI was blowing a 10-point fourth quarter lead in a game it dearly needed.

So the fate of the victor is hard to determine and some players aren't spending much time worrying about it.

"To be honest with you, I don't really have a strong opinion", he said. "We're expecting him to be ready to play".

There's plenty of talk that the victor of the game should qualify for the four-team playoffs.

Chryst, 51, is the first UW coach to win at least 10 games in his first two seasons. In 2011, a Russell Wilson led squad beat Michigan State 42-39 for the Championship.

Penn State (10-2, 8-1) enters with eight straight wins and averaged 40.4 points during the stretch en route to the East Division crown. The phenomenon began on October 5, 1996, prior to the Ohio State-Penn State game in Columbus, Ohio, when he put on OSU's "Brutus Buckeye" mascot head to show his pick to win the game - watch here.

With both teams streaking and so much at stake, it's hard to downplay the magnitude of the teams' first matchup since 2013.

A few nights ago, James Franklin hung out with Penn State students camping out for tickets to the Big Ten Championship Game.

"Uh", he replied, "I don't know".

McSorley is the second Nittany Lion to earn Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, joining Saquon Barkley, who was a two-time honoree. And it comes after the football program was hit with sanctions, stemming from that scandal, that cut scholarships and imposed other punitive measures. "Just as a player, you have to go make the plays". The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions are not in the committee's eyes. Are we going to do that or not now that we're playing in the championship game?

Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley on his team's offense: "It's nearly like pick your poison". Or do you see a runaway.

"He's the heartbeat of our team and our offense", quarterback Trace McSorley said Monday. They felt like we were going against our word, too. But there is a great deal of commonality between the teams, specifically in that they have faced six of the same conference opponents.

Wisconsin's opportunistic defense ranks third nationally in scoring defense (13.7) and rushing defense (100.8 yards per game). At the same time, MI is admittedly a good football team and could probably go toe-to-toe with anyone in the nation, Alabama included.

After appearing to roll his right ankle at the end of a third-quarter run against Michigan State, Barkley limped to the sideline. He's rushed for 1,219 yards and a conference-leading 15 touchdowns this season and is expected to play after suffering a right leg injury last week against Michigan State.

McSorley, who is adept at keeping his eyes on his receivers downfield while moving around in the pocket, led the Big Ten in pass efficiency with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions.

The outburst cost MI $10,000 in the form of a fine Monday from the Big Ten, pocket change when the coach makes $7 million a year. In his time he has posted back to back ten win seasons as he ended the season previous year at 10-3, and has already gotten back to a 10-2 record heading into this weekend's Big Ten Championship game.

Senior cornerback Sojourn Shelton, a sophomore when Chryst was hired, talked to tight end Austin Traylor to get a scouting report on his new coach.
