Florida Panthers fire coach Gerard Gallant

MacLean spoke Monday on Sporstnet 590 The Fan's The Jeff Blair Show a day after the Panthers fired Gallant and assistant coach Mike Kelly following a 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

With a 10-10-2 record this season, it is no wonder that the Florida Panthers decided to make a coaching change.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (11-9-1): Veteran Jaromir Jagr has collected four points over his last four games after recording only six in his first 17 contests.

Tom Rowe, the team's general manager, will take over as coach on an interim basis, the report said. Florida's next game is on Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks, so expect the vacancy to get filled very quickly.

Players were off Monday, though Rowe was meeting with them to discuss both the decision to fire Gallant and how he wants certain defensive schemes to change on the ice. But the Panthers have simply been mediocre in some areas, including power-play (21st out of 30 teams) and penalty-killing (19th).

"It didn't look good, but I'll tell you right now, we respect him and like him and Gerard and I had a good relationship".

Rowe becomes the Panthers' 14th coach, and the fifth person to be behind the Florida bench in the last five years. He went another, and became the first National Hockey League coach to be fired since this season started. "What we do going forward, we'll worry about that in the offseason". That is a very record, but I guess they are thinking they could do better.

"We've been unhappy with the inconsistent performance", Panthers President and CEO Matthew Caldwell said. He was an assistant coach with the Carolina Hurricanes from 2008 to 2011 and won the Stanley Cup with the team as a player in 2006.

Panthers head coach Gerard Gallant was sacked after the game, he confirmed as he waited for taxi outside PNC Arena after news of his dismissal broke. Last season under Gallant, the Panthers notched franchise records in win (47) and points (103) while winning their first Atlantic Division title. "As far as the systems go, that's the only area that we're going to fix and talk about with the players tomorrow".

After Stalberg was called for an offensive zone boarding penalty, Jonathan Marchessault snapped Carolina's penalty kill streak with his 10th goal of the season.

An Associated Press photographer snapped shots of Kelly and Gallant piling their luggage into a taxi cab as it arrived before the auto the team ordered showed up.
