Trump summons Romney for 2nd look as staffers squabble

Retired General David Petraeus entered the running to become secretary of state under President-elect Donald Trump, after the two held talks on Monday.

Trump scheduled a series of meetings in NY on Monday with prospective administration hires, after spending Thanksgiving weekend at his Palm Beach, Florida, estate.

He met the president-elect for an hour in NY on Monday, after which the president-elect sounded positive, tweeting: "Just met with General Petraeus - was very impressed!"

General Petraeus' past mishandling of classified documents is unlikely to be an obstacle to Mr Trump offering him a top government post, said a source who has advised the transition team on national security.

Petraeus told reporters that he and Trump spoke for about an hour, and the president-elect "showed a great grasp of a variety of the challenges that are out there, and some of the opportunities as well". He commanded forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan and rewrote the manual on counterinsurgency, a strategy that led to Al Qaeda being wiped out in Iraq (before it reemerged as ISIS after the U.S. pulled troops out of the country).

"Ever since President Obama and the Democrat-led Congress passed the law six years ago, that law's failures have been piling up", Price has said.

Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence have met with about 70 people so far as they look to shape their White House and Cabinet team before taking office on January 20.

Choosing Petraeus could offer Trump a way to end a rift in his ranks over whether to select Romney or Giuliani. On Tuesday, he is set to meet with Tennessee Sen.

Trump announced his choice of Price, while the selection of Chao, the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, was confirmed by a person with knowledge of the decision but not authorized to speak publicly.

"I'm all for party unity, but I'm not sure we have to pay for that with the secretary of state position", Conway told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union".

Widely respected as a commander in Afghanistan and later Central Intelligence Agency director, Petraeus saw his career implode for sharing official secrets with his biographer and lover, Paula Broadwell.

Kellyanne Conway, senior adviser to President-elect Donald Trump's transition team. But several Trump backers, including campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, have questioned whether Romney should be given such a lofty position after his intense criticism of Trump during the campaign. But his career unraveled after it was revealed he shared classified information with his biographer, whom he was also having an affair with. On Twitter, he singled out Virginia, California and New Hampshire.

Trump has denounced the recounts and now claims without evidence that he, not Clinton, would have won the popular vote if it hadn't been for "millions of people who voted illegally". He's an orthopedic surgeon by trade, and was an early supporter of Trump's presidential candidacy.

Trump also met on Monday with Frances Townsend, a national security aide during the George W. Bush administration.

On NBC's "Meet the Press", Conway said Stein, "the Hillary people" and others supporting recounts have to decide whether they are going to back a peaceful transition "or if they're going to be a bunch of crybabies and sore losers about an election that they can't turn around".

Other top Trump allies, notably Conway, have launched a highly unusual public campaign against a Romney nomination.
