Suspect in fatal police shooting upset over custody battle

On Monday evening, the son of the slain officer posted on Facebook that the family had received a call from President-elect Donald Trump, who offered his condolences.

That man, Otis Tryrone McKane, has been arrested after a 30-hour manhunt, according to My San Antonio. Marconi was shot to death in his squad auto while writing out a traffic ticket. The suspect parked a vehicle behind Marconi's police cruiser, walked over and fired two shots into the officer's auto, hitting him once him in the head, then fleeing.

The affidavit states that Marconi was in the process of writing what believes to be a traffic ticket when a black Mitsubishi Galant pulled behind Marconi's patrol vehicle.

Police Chief William McManus said the gunman paused and fired a second time.

The San Antonio man was arrested on a capital murder charge Monday afternoon in the fatal shooting of Marconi, 50.

"Every law enforcement officer is now keenly aware of being targeted", he said.

A police officer has been fatally shot in Texas, and another in Missouri was shot in the face but is expected to survive, in what authorities are calling the latest in a series of targeted attacks on law enforcement.

"A lot" of leads led police to McCain on Monday, though McManus did not reveal further details about the investigation.

He credits teamwork with McKane's arrest.

Four police officers were shot in three states during a 24 four hour period over the weekend.

David Pughes, interim police chief in Dallas, urged his officers Monday to partner in pairs. A witness saw the video of the vehicle, recognized the rims and called police, identifying the suspect as well, police said.

The department released footage of a man seen inside police headquarters four hours before the shooting and video of a auto leaving the scene, CNN-affiliate KPRC reported.

This year's targeted killings are the most since 1995, Floyd said.

"Police officers are doing their jobs the best they can, sometimes heroically, but now more than ever this kind of violence is in the back of their minds", Pasco told USA TODAY.

Officers also were shot and wounded Sunday night during traffic stops in Sanibel, Florida, and Gladstone, Missouri. But before any of that, as the Express-News first reported, McKane somehow managed to get married at the downtown county courthouse while investigators were still connecting the dots.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement asking everyone in Texas to pray for the Marconis' loved ones as they deal with "this unimaginable tragedy".

San Antonio Detective Benjamin Marconi was the 60th officer shot to death this year, compared with 41 in all of 2015, and the 20th to die in an ambush-style attack, compared with eight last year, Floyd said.
