Suspect Arrested In Ambush Killing Of San Antonio Police Officer

The sergeant is expected to survive.

A total of 60 police officers have been fatally shot nationwide this year, compared to 36 during the same span in 2015, or an increase of 67 percent, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

One of those officers, a San Antonio police detective was killed.

Police say Marconi had pulled over a driver on the south side of the police station on Sunday and returned to his patrol vehicle to write a ticket.

An ambush-style attack does not necessarily involve someone lying in wait for police officers; it's any shooting created to catch police off-guard and put them at a disadvantage, Floyd said. As he was escorted out of the police department, reporters asked him why he had been upset.

San Antonio police Chief William McManus identified the officer as 50-year-old Benjamin Marconi, a 20-year veteran of the force.

Police said the search for a male suspect was still underway Monday and that no arrest has been made.

"He was always the first one to tell somebody, 'I'm taking your auto keys away".

"I lashed out at somebody that didn't deserve it", McKane said, according to video provided by KSAT 12 News.

"We weren't sure if he was going to be shooting all around the area", Patterson said.

McManus described Marconi as a 20-year veteran of the department and Roy Naylor, a former colleague of Marconi's, told NBC News that Marconi was a sex crimes detective who "excelled" at his work. The fact that he's been taken into custody, that does not negate the fact that there are people out there who are still targeting police officers. The wounded officer was treated at a hospital and released. The witness immediately picked out the suspect from the picture, the affidavit said. Ten days after that attack, a man wearing a ski mask and armed with two rifles and a pistol killed three officers near a gas station and convenience store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The suspect was shot and killed, per the Kansas City Star. In one drive-by incident, the shooter fired on an officer while in his vehicle. Officers are being reminded to practice "situational awareness", to expect the unexpected and to "never take any assignment for granted", he said.

Four police officers were attacked within a 24-hour period. St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson declined to name the officer, but admitted that the father-of-three was shot without reason.

McManus said earlier on Monday the "uniform was the target".

Taylor said she has received support from mayors across the United States, from Gov. Greg Abbott's office, and from the White House.
