Frederick County churches seek shoe-box gift donations for Operation Christmas Child

For those boxes that need extra items, many large corporations around the country donate additional items to help fill the boxes.

With Christmas just a little more than a month away, Operation Christmas Child has been launched for 2016.

Boxes can be dropped off at United First Methodist Church, 401 West Main Street, Richmond, and at Westside Baptist Church, 699 Prince Royal Drive, Berea. They are representing three humanist families who say the constitution's guarantee of the separation of church and state is violated when their suburban Denver school district asks their children to assemble Christmas gift boxes that include the "opportunity.to faithfully follow Jesus Christ". "There is no joy quite like that of giving and it is an honor to use our resources to let children around the world know they are loved and not forgotten".

Often the children are living in poverty or war afflicted regions, or have been affected by disaster or disease. The hours are Monday-Friday 6 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.to 12:30 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.to 2 p.m.

Gifts for children around the world came wrapped in shoeboxes to the collection center at Cornerstone Christian Church in Effingham on Wednesday. The shoeboxes can then be delivered to several local drop-off sites in the area.

Area residents participate in a shoebox-packing party November 5 at the Stanfield Baptist Church.
