Caregiver Arrested in Case of Dismembered Toddler Kyrian Knox

"It was pretty hard to deal with", Romero said.

Harris was formally charged with murder, concealment of a homicide and dismemberment of a body, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi announced on Tuesday evening.

Police say they believe the lactose-intolerant boy drank milk and was crying before he was killed. Kevin Duffin said a break for investigators came when blood found in a vehicle driven by Harris was matched to the child. "The baby was lactose intolerant and had been crying all afternoon".

That same day, Harris called a witness to say he had "f-- up" and that "something bad happened", according to Santini.

Kyrian was last seen when in August 2015, when his mother left him in the care of her family friend in Rockford, Illinois.

Harris, who'd been watching the boy while his mother moved to Iowa, is charged with first-degree murder.

"The vast amount of evidence here in Chicago and the fact that Chicago Police have done most of the investigation, it was determined he would be charged here in Cook County", Duffin said.

By September 2015, Harris was getting harder to reach.

By Sept 5, Kyrian's severed hands, feet and head were found in the West Side lagoon along with several weights with plastic bags knotted through the center. For toddlers Kyrian's age, it's a time when developmental milestones tumble out in rapid succession.

On September 17, 2015, she reported her son as missing.

Kyrian's grandmother, Cameshia Harris, was incredulous at the motive police shared. He told investigators he'd handed the boy over to three people who claimed they were friends of the Knox family and would be taking Kyrian to his mother.

"Harris called a witness and said he had f'd up and something awful had happened", Santini said during the hearing. The Camaro was caught on an IPass camera shortly after 6 p.m. on August 31, 2015, Santini said.

Harris was in custody in Winnebago County on another charge when he was arrested for Kyrian's murder on Monday, Duffin said.

"As a father of a 6-month-old myself, it's hard to fathom why someone would do this to a child", said Jason Ervin, an alderman of Chicago's 28th Ward, where the park is located.
