Trump names Priebus, Bannon to senior White House roles

Former Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro accused the site of embracing "a movement shot through with racism and anti-Semitism", and Bannon's ex-wife has testified in court that Bannon has "said he doesn't like Jews" and didn't want his children to go to school with Jews.

Bannon, along with Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, joined the campaign in August after the Republican National Convention, and is said to have been behind Trump's tougher stance on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

But Obama, who criticized Trump's temperament during the campaign, said it was important for Trump to send signals of unity after the hard-fought campaign.

"I am very grateful to the president-elect for this opportunity to serve him and this nation as we work to create an economy that works for everyone, secure our borders, repeal and replace Obamacare and destroy radical Islamic terrorism", Priebus said in the statement announcing his appointment.

Bannon has always been associated with the far right of the GOP and used his Breitbart platform to encourage the party to move away from the political center.

John Weaver, a top strategist for Republican Ohio Governor John Kasich, tweeted that the "racist, fascist extreme right is represented footsteps from the Oval Office". While RNC Chair Reince Priebus' promotion to Chief of Staff is viewed largely as a safe choice and one that bridges the gap with party establishment figures, Trump also tapped Stephen Bannon as chief strategist and senior counselor.

Giuliani became one of Trump's closest advisers during the campaign, functioning as his most vocal defender on cable news programs and introducing him at many rallies.

"He was a force for good on the campaign", Priebus said on Fox News, adding they were in agreement on "almost everything" in terms of advising the president-elect.

The president-elect and his transition team are working on picking members of his Cabinet and the heads of federal agencies.

Donald Trump has the right to appoint whoever he wants, Republicans in Washington are saying in response to the US president-elect naming Steve Bannon as his top strategist, American news outlets reported on Monday.

The Breitbart attacks on Ryan continued on Sunday, with an article denouncing Ryan's comment on CNN that "we are not planning on erecting a deportation force".

"Speaker Ryan is now telling voters that he will not enact a central part of Trump's mandate", a Breitbart article said.

In the "60 Minutes" interview, Trump said he would move to deport up to 3 million immigrants who are in the country illegally and have criminal records.
