Pope encourages Azerbaijan's Catholics to be people of faith, service

"The Azerbaijani people, state and its leader invariably want a just solution of the conflict peacefully, within the norms of worldwide law", Sheikh ul-Islam said while speaking at a meeting with Pope Francis in the Heydar Mosque on the same day.

Despite the Vatican's assertion that a so-called sex-change surgery does not alter the sex of a person, Pope Francis has nevertheless chosen to refer to a woman who underwent a sex-change operation as a "man", and also referred to her as having "married" another woman and admitted to receiving them in the Vatican a year ago. People must be accompanied as Jesus accompanies them, when a person who has this condition arrives before Jesus, Jesus surely doesn't tell them 'go away because you are homosexual'.

Gender theory refers to acceptance of someone's choice of identity as male or female, both or neither, irrespective of their biological sex.

Pope Francis gestures as he speaks to journalists on his flight back to Rome following a visit in Georgia and Azerbaijan, on Sunday.

"It is one thing for people to have a homosexual tendency or even to change sex, but it is another thing to try to teach along this line in schools, to change the mentality. This is what I call 'ideological colonization, '" Francis told reporters.

Francis drew a firm distinction between the need for priests to minister to transgender Catholics and what he called the "nasty" tendency of schools to "indoctrinate" children with the idea that their gender is something that can be picked and chosen and changed. "Some were not able (to obey Church teachings), but I accompanied them and I never abandoned one of them".

During his trip to Georgia and Azerbaijan, he told priests and nuns that teaching gender theory in schools was part of a "global war" against marriage. "It is ideological colonization that destroys".

Reuters said Francis was asked his thoughts on the White House race during a press conference aboard his plane while traveling from Azerbaijan.

"But each case must be welcomed, accompanied, studied, discerned and integrated. Please", the pope told reporters, "Don't say, 'The pope will bless transgender people, ' OK?" It is a moral problem.

Francis said he would never interfere in an electoral campaign, saying "the people are sovereign". Many American Catholics and people of conscience are struggling with how to choose between two candidates, one of whom diverts from some aspects of the Church's teaching and the other of whom has made statements vilifying immigrants and religious minorities.
