David Ortiz given standing ovation in Yankee Stadium finale

The questions about whether David Ortiz would be booed or cheered for his final appearance at Yankee Stadium were silly, as if there weren't going to be some NY fans who would put aside years of differences to show some respect in saying goodbye, along with an even heavier-than-usual population of Red Sox fans in attendance to cheer unabashedly - and, wow, was it ever that.

RHP Joe Kelly was charged with a blown save Wednesday night when he allowed a two-out grand slam to Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira. It was a quiet clubhouse as the Yankees knew it was time to plan for next year.

"It's pretty quiet in there".

There were no cheers or tears, but a half hour or so before the Yankees completed a three-game series sweep over the Red Sox with a 5-1 win, they were officially eliminated from the postseason when Baltimore beat Toronto Thursday night. He went into Spring Training without a guaranteed spot in the rotation.

"If you wanted to point to one day that changed the course of Red Sox history, that would be the day", team historian Gordon Edes said.

Most Yankees fans looked to the future. While his massive contract could have played a part, Sabathia had a chance to show that he still had something left in the tank.

While Sabathia is no longer the ace the Yankees signed to an eight-year, $186 million deal, he proved this season that he can still be a useful piece in the middle to backend of a rotation. Ortiz has received a lot of interesting gifts during his retirement tour this season, but this may have been the most thoughtful. "So I don't think it's going to happen", he said with a laugh. "We didn't do what we were supposed to do".

Holt started all three games in the recent series in NY and was the starter Friday night against Toronto, too.

"When you fall short, the responsibility falls on everybody", Girardi said. "I saw it the minute I started playing for the Red Sox". "You realize there's a ton of work to start over again". Farrell said there is not a set pitch count and how far Owens goes will be based on the game unfolds.

Boston (92-67) is competing with Cleveland (91-67) and Texas (94-65) for the AL's best record and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Ortiz struck out in the second inning against CC Sabathia, dropping to 0 for 10 in the three-game series and hitless in his last 14 at-bats against the Yankees.

Hembree came back out for the 6th inning.

"He was the one who gave voice to the anger, the sadness and the defiance that all of us felt", Edes said. We play during the season, we get involved in everything we've got to do.

Given that this is how he's got Holt and Bogaerts lined up in a full batting order, it's fair to say this might be what we're going to see in October.

LHP Drew Pomeranz will throw a 30-to-35 pitch bullpen session Thursday and it is his normal in between start routine.

Tanaka was skipped over his last start in Toronto due to a mild right forearm strain stemming from his September 21 start at Tampa Bay.
