More STAR WARS Films Planned For 2021 'And Beyond'

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first of what Disney and Lucasfilm are calling their Star Wars Anthology films. We all assumed a new Star Wars Story would follow in 2020 but publicly, very little had been said about the possibility.

"We figured out the odds for making good films", Iger said, according to Deadline. But he remains optimistic.

The executive would go on to say the following about Rogue One: "We never felt it would do the level that "Force Awakens" did".

Iger was then pressed about the future of the Star Wars franchise, to which he confirmed that the House of Mouse has already begun drafting up plans for 2020 and beyond - surprise!

Coming up, fans can expect to see Rogue One in December, Episode VIII a year after that, and then the Han Solo spinoff starring Alden Ehrenreich in 2018.

This year, the entertainment juggernaut is slated to release yet another entry in the Star Wars franchise. While Darth Vader and a few other recognizable characters make appearances, Rogue One primarily focuses on a new cast of characters.

Iger said at a conference in NY that ditching Miramax and Touchstone early in his tenure that started more than a decade ago in order to focus on branded franchise films has proven a "phenomenal" strategy. Instead, Rogue One sends a ragtag band of rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the first Death Star.

As for Star Wars: Episode IX, it's expected 2019 with Colin Trevorrow of Jurassic Park and Safety Not Guaranteed directing.

Describing the film as "experimental", Bob was keen to play down expectations that it would match the incredible $2 billion box office haul that The Force Awakens managed.

This is one empire that's not going to fall anytime soon.
