Mourinho tells Pogba to forget price tag

UNITED boss Jose Mourinho has defended Paul Pogba and insisted he will justify his world record transfer fee.

However, the midfielder's performances for Manchester United since rejoining the club from Juventus have been mixed, and he was particularly quiet against Manchester City last weekend, and against Feyenoord in the Europa League.

"I think there are clubs that paid 20, 30, 40 [million pounds] which is a bigger deal than what Man United paid for Paul", said Mourinho, who takes his side to Watford on Sunday. "I just want Paul to forget that and play his football".

Following on from Paul Pogba's poor showing against Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday night - the ex-United midfielder had his say on the Frenchman. He had no pre-season, played in the final of the Euros, had a holiday and then came back.

"It's normal when you fight for top positions that it happens but I have a very good relationship; a strong relationship with him. As the team improves, form improves".

It's been a while since that has been the case and a third consecutive defeat drew a line under the optimism of the first few weeks of the José Mourinho era while providing an alarming flashback to the troubled times under Louis van Gaal. Due to that he could not get a proper pre season. "If you need other people to motivate you?.?I always feel that I am an extra source of motivation?.?but the motivation belongs to the player".

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that Paul Pogba tries to do too much with the ball and tries to emulate Lionel Messi, rather than what he was bought to do.

'It's been a little bit of a struggle for him so far, tonight, again, wasn't his best performance. Its still very early days. I don't think those positions are set in stone for anybody. However, at times it does look like he's trying too hard to impress the keyboard warriors on Twitter who immediately slate him as the most overrated player ever when he doesn't score a hat-trick every game, fly to the moon and bring about world peace. He should keep it simple for now. "If you are an honest player, he is going to be an honest manager with you". "He's got great ability to run at a player".
