Cilic beats Gasquet to send Croatia into Davis Cup final

Croatia won its only final 11 years ago away to Slovakia and will play either Argentina or Britain in the final. Later, Argentina defeated defending champions Great Britain 3-2 to reach the Davis Cup final on Sunday.

Being taken the distance against Del Potro was exactly what Murray didn't need at the end of his long summer of tennis in which he won both the Wimbledon and Olympic titles for the second time.

"Tomorrow morning we will decide if I am going to play in the doubles or not", Cilic said.

Murray had never previously lost a home singles match in the Davis Cup. He is a unsafe player, a fighter and great champion.

"I am so happy to be playing tennis again after three surgeries".

"I can not imagine this moment in my career", Del Potro said.

Cilic blasted a backhand crosscourt for break point and broke for 6-5 on a Gasquet forehand error.

The Croatian No. 1 won seven of nine points played on Gasquet's second serve in the second set, breaking twice for a two-set lead.

Japan blanks Ukraine
In Tokyo, Kei Nishikori teamed up with Yuichi Sugita in a dominant doubles victory as Japan completed a 3-0 defeat of Ukraine.
The world No. 5 looked sharp as the Japanese pair ran out easy 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 winners over Artem Smirnov and Sergiy Stakhovsky in Osaka to give the home side an unassailable lead in the World Group playoff with only two rubbers remaining.
Nishikori sat out Friday's opening singles following his exertions over the summer as Taro Daniel and Yoshihito Nishioka put Japan in firm control of the tie.
But his presence was felt in the doubles as the Japanese ran riot, giving Sugita the flawless present ahead of his 28th birthday Sunday, when the final two matches will now be abbreviated dead rubbers.

The victor will face either France or Croatia, who are locked at 1-1 in the other last-four tie, in the final.

World number 11 Marin Cilic beat talented youngster Lucas Pouille in four sets to level the Davis Cup World Group semi-final tie between Croatia and France at 1-1 on Friday.

Leonardo Mayer beat Dan Evans 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the decisive rubber.

France were without the injured Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, their two best ranked players.

First up on the court are expected to be Cilic and Richard Gasquet, then Borna Coric and Pouille, if needed.

Coric was hampered by a knee problem that forced him to pull out of the US Open. "It's been a dream weekend for us", said 2014 US Open victor Cilic.

Cilic is expected to team up with Ivan Dodig in Saturday´s crucial doubles against French pair Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.
