Stuart Lancaster makes move across the water to join Leinster

While he was with England, Lancaster had several high-profile assistants in Andy Farrell, Mike Catt and Graham Rowntree - all former England internationals - with the trio widely reported to be running most of the day to day training sessions.

Former England head coach Stuart Lancaster has returned to rugby union as senior coach at Leinster until the end of the season, the Irish province said on Monday (NZT Tuesday).

Lancaster left his role as England head coach in November 2015 after a dismal World Cup campaign which saw the Red Rose become the first ever home nation to fail to qualify for the knockout stage.

As an initially short-term replacement for Kurt McQuilkin as defence coach - "straight away", according to Cullen - both he and Lancaster said his role would take in attack and helping with the academy. I have never felt, even when I was England coach, that it was about me and proving myself.

"(At) Counties Manukau my main remit was to coach defence. "It's more for me about the people - if you get the right people working together and there's a common objective and a common aim, the titles to a certain extent are slightly irrelevant".

"It's more for me about the people, if you get the right people working together and there's a common objective and a common aim, the titles to a certain extent are slightly irrelevant to a certain extent".

Lancaster came under huge pressure for several aspects of the failure, including the way in which he parachuted Sam Burgess into the squad and particularly in the way that defence coach Andy Farrell's influence became so much that his son Owen Farrell was picked ahead of George Ford, who had seemingly been Lancaster's first-choice out-half.

"I'm more than happy to work underneath Leo because I don't know the club, I don't know the environment, I don't know the relationships". I did look at opportunities over there but they didn't come up.

Cullen believes he has signed an all-rounder. "You've got to get better".

"Straight away there's a big attraction there for having a candidate like Stuart here so I'm absolutely delighted that he's made a decision to join here".

Lancaster will team up with current Leinster head coach Leo Cullen. It suits me down to the ground just to get back into coaching again.

Lancaster suffered an ill-fated reign as England head coach from 2011-2015.
