After vanquishing 16 party rivals, warring with much of the Republican establishment and sparking controversy at the party convention, Donald Trump on Tuesday secured the party's 2016 nomination for the White House. Just before the billionaire businessman reached the magic delegate number, Trump's children arrived on the convention floor with the NY delegation to watch the roll call. Christie was on Trump's short list for vice president, but lost out to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

The Michigan delegation delayed announcing its vote total so that Trump's home state of NY could put the nominee over the top.

If you were watching the live coverage of the delegations announcing their votes, you probably saw delegates talk about their state or territory in a positive light. "Anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now, '" Spicer said. Some delegates emphasized a need for a televised display of unity after the deeply divisive GOP primary.

But Trump has blurred that line by paying roughly 25% of his campaign expenditures to his own companies.
