USA election: Anti-Trump rebellion quashed in vote

The convention rules committee debated Thursday, July 14, whether to unbind delegates, freeing them to vote for any candidate as the nominee.

Kasich has declined to endorse Trump and doesn't plan to take part in GOP convention floor proceedings in his home state, where Kasich won the GOP primary and had hoped to challenge Trump in a contested convention before the businessman's delegate lead became insurmountable.

Davis, who has represented Beaufort since 2009 and previously served as a convention delegate in 2012, named several reasons for the platform committee to be skewing in that direction.

It's still not technically over for the group: anti-Trump leaders will have until Monday to submit the names of 28 rules panel members who support the effort in order to force a vote on the floor of the full convention. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said he was a friend of Trump's, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Brady won't be speaking, either. More than 80 people died after a truck driver deliberately ran them down during Bastille Day celebrations.

"Republican voters have just been denied the opportunity to have its duly elected representatives to the convention be given the freedom to vote their conscience and nominate the best candidate to uphold Republican principles and the best candidate to defeat Hillary Clinton", Lonegan said after the vote.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Bangor, Maine, on June 29, 2016. The delegates had agreed to drop their demands for party reforms such as forbidding paid lobbyists from becoming RNC members if the party would agree to incentives encouraging states to allow only party members to vote in their presidential primaries and caucuses, he said.

Trump is preparing for next week's Republican National Convention in Cleveland, where he will be formally nominated as the party's presidential candidate for the November 8 election. One was to unbind the delegates, to free them to 'vote their conscience.' And that vote lsot 87-12.

On the other side, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus was personally involved in negotiations, which were mostly conducted through emissaries, according to his spokesman. If they vote for the minority report it could mean that Trump's numbers are not as solid as they seem.

A list of the speakers Trump promised to appear at the convention were published by the New York Times on Wednesday.

We'll see if they're right.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee tweeted on Wednesday night that he would announce his choice on Friday at 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) in Manhattan.
