Doctor Who Christmas Special titled The Husbands of River Song

"Doctor Who" season nine has just aired its final episode last Saturday.

He said that since they had just lost Clara, he did not want to bring in a new regular companion for the Doctor.

The revamped sonic screwdriver was given to River by the Doctor the last time he saw his wife alive, right before she went to the Library. As you'll see in the graphic included below, Twelve's Sonic is a little more of an open design than Eleven's more encased design that he received in his debut outing.

Now the screwdriver is back though, and with a brand-new design-the first redesign for the device in five years, as incumbent Time Lord Capaldi shared a design with his predecessor, Matt Smith. The first time he met her, she died. It's highly possible when you take into account when, in River's timeline, "The Husbands of River Song" takes place.

The Christmas special looks like it's going to be lighter in tone which may or may not please some of the fans (no change there).

To celebrate the grand opening of this year's Christmas season those lovely people over at the BBC have released not only the title of this year's festive special, but the synopsis and even a new picture.

But yes, aside from River's controversial return, "The Husbands of River Song" will also be re-introducing The Doctor's technological catch-all device, the sonic screwdriver.

Matt Lucas is also guests stars as a character called Nardole. All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and at a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time... It's light, and quite emotional at the end.

"I thought, given that I'm knackered at the end of a series, what would be a treat for me would be getting Alex Kingston back onto Doctor Who". It's unusual because they're now, in our human terms, the ideal couple. It works. She's great with Peter [Capaldi]. She looks unbelievable. She totally gets how to do that part.
